On November 18, 2004, seventeen random travelers from Australia, the U.K. and North America gathered in Cuzco, Peru to tackle the most famous hike in South America - The Inca Trail - a four day trek laid by the Incas from the Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu.
While the total distance is only 33km / 20.5mi, the trail starts at 2,200m / 7,218ft and it reaches an altitude of 4,198m / 13,773ft at the highest point - 'dead woman's pass'. The trial is often rocky and a bit treacherous at times, but as we experienced, it was well designed for irrigation. Consequently, we found out that they don't call this time of year 'the rainy season' for nothing.
There are a number of incredible Inca ruins along the way, and this trail is the only way to access them. Our guide group, SAS Travel. was top-notch and provided wonderful meals, equipment and informative narration. And our group of random international travelers, bonded over the amazing once-in-a-lifetime experience.
This is a compilation of photos taken by the group of our trek.
